Jizzy Pearl | All You Need Is Soul

As far as underrated talents go, Jizzy Pearl has to be (unfortunately) one of the singers/songwriters that deserves far more accolades than he is getting. The dude fronted one of the best and underrated bands in Love/Hate, he nailed everything when he was the lead singer in RATT and with L.A. Guns, and he knows what it takes to keep his pipes in shape. He never wanes, he never loses his edge … how many singers from the ’80s can you say that about? His new album, All You Need Is Soul, is a testament to that hard work ethic and his drive to give the fans the best music he can possibly deliver.

The opening track “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone” is just Pearl wailing the title to start the song, unaccompanied by music, and the range and sheer sleaze will get your fists pumping immediately. Like everything he sings, it sounds like you can sing along to it right up until you try it. Odds are, you just can’t … at least not well.

“Comin’ Home to the Bone” is a silly anthem, about booze and chicks and the groove will make you want to embrace both, depending on your religion and sexual preference. Regardless, it’s another stadium rocker that’d be perfect in a live setting.

The title track is heavy duty, a grinding, churning composition that as always, maintains a strong melody. There’s a herky-jerkiness to the pacing because it’s almost Grunge in some ways, and also owns one of the best guitar solos on the album.

“When The Devil Comes” is likely the best track on the release. It’s guitar-driven, a bit slower than most of the other songs, but you can hear it once and the lyrics stick in your noggin.

“It Doesn’t Matter” is the only real mid-tempo composition here. It’s acoustic-led, emotional, and sounds like an ’80s Hair Metal ballad. All of those things are compliments. It’s a nice change of pace on an album that is more razorblades than rain.

2018 is churning out some incredible music, when the past few years have been somewhat lackluster. All You Need Is Soul is another strong addition to this year, and it honestly gets better each time you listen to it.
