They give it their best shot, but usually fall victim to being unable to reproduce that warm, natural sound that was both so primitive yet so soul-penetrating. One of the few ‘70s sound replication success stories is a band coming out of Los Angeles, simply called Charlotte. The original launch of the band tried to happen back in the ‘80s, but success at that time wasn’t in the cards … until 2010 when Charlotte found their way to Eonian Records who released the band’s debut entitled Medusa Groove. Twelve years later, Charlotte has now released their self-titled sophomore effort … which is basically all of the tracks from Medusa Groove plus 5 additional tracks.

What hits you right away is the band’s sound. Guitarists Nick Dibacco and Vinnie Cacciotti create a wall of sound that’s deep, thick, and warm. They make the listener feel like they just plunged into an encompassing mud bath, offering at the same time both relaxation and invigoration. Music-wise, Charlotte has a ‘70s influenced blues-based Hard Rock sound similar to old-time greats like Budgie and Humble Pie, but are still able to inject their own form of Sunset Strip fun and flair.

Vocally, Eric Ganz is a true talent, and Charlotte uses his gift to its full extent. Ganz’s style and sound is a remarkable cross between Jack Russell from Great White and Sebastian Bach from Skid Row. He’s fully in control of his voice throughout each of the 17 tracks on this album. He’s easy and pleasant to listen to on one end, but can fire you up when the band rises above their mid-tempo comfort zone. Jack Russell fans should most definitely check out what Ganz has to offer.

Overall, this self-titled Charlotte release is strong start to finish. There’s nothing overly complicated in their music, but it “feels good” and has a familiar vibe that should appeal to Classic Hard Rock fans. Most tracks establish a good riff and rhythm and stay with it throughout the song a la AC/DC, but nothing wears out its welcome since just about all tracks are in the 3:30 run-time range.

You won’t go wrong with this release, and fans of Budgie, Deep Purple, Great White, Skid Row, and The Dead Daisies should be particularly pleased with what’s on offer from a band that deserves kudos for never letting go of the dream … and making the most out of their eventual opportunity.

Genre: Hard Rock

Band Members:
Eric Ganz – Lead Vocals
Nick Dibacco – Guitars
Vinnie Cacciotti – Guitars
Chris Colovas – Bass
Eric Brewton – Drums

Tracklisting:
1.
