Starlight Theater, Kansas City, MO, USA, June 14, 2022
Midwest favorite, REO Speedwagon takes the stage at Starlight on what is the hottest night of the summer so far. Tuesday night (June 14th, 2022) in Kansas City, REO ends the triple bill as the night’s headliner with Styx and Loverboy. Fans were out in droves for a well welcomed post-pandemic return of live music. The much-anticipated return of such a large production performance led to a sold out show. Speedwagon has such a well established history with Kansas City from the 1970’s Summer Jams to today. The band always reflects on the famous tornado event in 1978 at Royal’s Stadium where the fan base stayed in the arena, regardless of the tornado sirens. They also shout out to KY 102 radio station for supporting them in Kansas City.
The current line up has remained unchanged since 1989. Neal Doughty on keyboards hasn’t missed a show since the inception of the group in 1967. Kevin Cronin (KC) on lead vocals, rhythm guitar, and piano has fronted the group since 1976. At the age of 70, as KC reminds us, he has the energy and stamina to sing the fullest set! Bruce Hall on bass guitar has been with the group since 1977 and also has roles with lead and backing vocals. During Back on the Road Again, Bruce delivers a powerful and unwavering vocal performance. Dave Amato on lead guitar, and Bryan Hitt on drums are the new guys joining the group in 1989. During the electrified crowd favorite, Ridin’ the Storm out, both Dave and Bruce share a guitar solo while running back and forth across stage. At then end of the set, Kevin thanks the fans for being so amazing and promises to return to the city for another show. A promise from KC to the town of KC.
