But We Try It Deadlights

When bands experiment with new sounds, it, at times, can result in a new, great genre or a sub-genre of some sort. Unfortunately, for German newcomers But We Try It, their debut Deadlights will have listeners stunned with a sense of disappointment in less than 40 minutes.

The guitar work in Deadlights is melodic, and they balance each other in all the right places, with the exception of the predictability, which makes a listener quickly lose interest. A lot of the riffs are common, and the melodies don’t differ or spark any uniqueness that separates them from everything out there that roams around the same genre. And that is not the worst part; the vocals simply are terrible. The annoying shriek strikes a curiosity of why these German newcomers didn’t stick to the more standard vocals.

The album, in its entirety, doesn’t have that song that will spark or capture a listener’s attention long enough to make it through the entire album. “The Great Disaster” benefits because the lyricism can be catchy enough to draw your attention. But overall, it feels extremely weak and lacks real power, as if the vocalist is having trouble collecting enough wind to convincingly push the style off. “The Path to New” is the song that stands out from the bunch, but it does so much that it is something exceptional. It’s fast and aggressive, brutal and, at times, raw. The technicality is well performed, and constantly changes, which happens fluently, unlike the rest of the album. It’s the only song that seems that is belongs, and it doesn’t strike a second of boredom or repetitiveness.

But We Try It, says it all in its name: The attempt of creating a mix of thrash, hardcore and melodic death metal leaves a trail of questioning. Perhaps, their next effort will have a more diverse and complex clarity that will intrigue an audience.
