After a hot day of laying on the beach or just getting a tan from catching some of the fish survivors from the lack of oxygen die-off a couple of months ago, Redondo Beach hosted another big cover-band fish:Adler’s Appetite. Kicking off their tour on Cinco de Mayo at Redondo’s Brixton, Steven Adler and the gang that makes up from other washed up hair metal bands such as: Quiet Riot, Faster Pussycat and Enuff Z’Nuff, crept from the backdoor– that directed onto the pier– to an overly excited crowd of about 200.
Small, intimate, and shy of it reminiscing the days before GNR was ever big, to a surprise, Adler’s Appetite hour long set was pretty darn good. Opening the night with “Reckless Life,” Adler’s Appetite kicked off their 45-day summer tour that comes 360 back to the Key Club in West Hollywood at the end of July. New singer, Patrick Stone, treated the small Brixton stage like it was the Rose Bowl– dominating every angle, reaching out to the crowd, and making sure everyone in the room was engaged in the main attraction. The same goes to say about the rest of the gang; Michael Thomas, Chip Z’Nuff and Lonny Paul, all exhibited pure delight and energy, and not to mention the goofy, big smile the glowing Mr. Adler had throughout the entire show.
The catchy chords of “Night Train” excited the crowd even more that only prepared them for “Out at Me” and “My Michelle.” With a weird long drumming intro, for a minute, the crowd was teased with thoughts of the band covering Iron Maiden’s “Run to the Hills” but it was just a pump for crowd favorites “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” and “Mr. Brownstone.”
The eclectic band uniqueness even exemplified through songs from Appetite For Destruction that included: “You’re Crazy” and “Anything Goes.” By the final song, “Welcome to the Jungle” Adler’s Appetite was more than a cover band, they definitely showed the years of musicianship and their true origins of the scene.
