The Ruse Midnight in the City

Midnight in the City, the third studio release by the Ruse, is a polished punk, new wave pop rock album. The band exhibits tastes of U2 or the Outfield. The songs have a catchy chorus, which makes them easy to remember.
While operating on a small label budget, the band manages to put out a major label-sounding release. The songwriting is exceptionally seasoned and the production is smooth. The album has a full, fat sound which is certainly pleasing to the ear.
Lyrically, the Ruse is right on the mark. There aren’t any songs that you listen to and know exactly what the band is writing about. The Ruse is one of those bands that writes their lyrics so that their fans can interpret them in many different ways. That’s a true sign of a good writer.
“Beautiful is Gone” opens the album with a bang. The guitar riff and effects remind you of “White Wedding” by Billy Idol. Of course the song doesn’t sound anything like it once it kicks in, but you’ll hear the riff like the hint of lime in Tostitos chips. The chorus is an energetic sing along and the contrast of the verses create a nice dynamic. The band keeps the energy going with “Collide” before slowing down on “Time & Place”.
“Come here come on” is another anthem that will get your attention in a hurry. With John Dauer’s smooth vocals and the driving rhythm, you can easily dig on this track.
It’s easy to see the attraction to Midnight in the City. It’s got sing along choruses and interperatable lyrics. It’s got a tight mix and a smooth finish. There isn’t much not to like about the Ruse … unless you want screaming and thrashing.
