Perversor Demon Metal

It has been said that the South American metal fans are the most enthusiastic and rabid of all metal fans. Yet, we hear little in the way of South American metal. Sure, there’s Sepultura and the Cavalera brothers’ off-shoot projects, and old Inquisition, but little else that jumps readily to mind. If the rest of South American metal is anything like Chile’s Perversor, then it’s a damn shame we’re not hearing more of it.
The first thing you will notice on Perversor’s newest release, Demon Metal, is the production quality. It is not high. It is similar to Sepultura’s first couple albums. That fact alone is going to put off a lot of people, which is too bad, because Demon Metal is a great EP, full of driving, simple, stripped down metal.
The guitar riffs are by no means the most technical riffs ever written, and the drummer relies mostly on variations of the blast beat, but that only helps to reinforce the feel of old school Thrash Metal. Combine that with the reverb-heavy vocals, and it feels like old Venom or Possessed with a slightly more modern aggression. Even the logo and album artwork are throw-backs to the Thrash Metal of old.
There are no real stand-out moments on this 5-song release. No solos; no break downs; no ballads; no clean guitar or vocal parts. It is just 17 minutes of straight forward, unpolished, unapologetic, relentless Black/Thrash Metal. Anyone who appreciates simple riffing and blast beats, and can listen past production quality will really enjoy Demon Metal.
