Somewhere between endearing nostalgia and eerily sterile earnestness, the self-titled debut by Swedish quintet Gin Lady offers an accurate, yet somewhat stultified impression from the 70s hard rock template. Hefty grooves, catchy melodies, and authentic-sounding restorations of the early 70s sound are all geared to recreate the golden days of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, and Blue Oyster Cult. But what’s lacking are the prototypes’ virtuosic chops, galvanizing songwriting and the spirit of discovery. Sincere in their fandom, Gin Lady – however – manage to escape the geek tag through good taste and studious candor which turn them from a curious oddity into a valid feature of the revivalist scene currently booming in their home country.
