The story of MISERY began deep in the heart of Texas …Pasadena, Texas, to be exact. Pasadena was not only the band’s hometown but also home to Gilley’s, the world’s largest honky-tonk bar. Gilley’s, named after country music star Mickey Gilley, opened in 1971 and gained national notoriety in 1980 with the success of the major motion picture “Urban Cowboy,” starring John Travolta. MISERY singer Greg Gilley also happened to be the son of Mickey. Greg and MISERY may have had that famous connection to stand behind initially, but the band made a name for itself during its time.
It all started in mid-1989 when singer & guitarist Greg Gilley was trying to get his project off the ground and reached out to guitarist Joe Villarreal who was fresh out of playing in the Houston band, The Jaxx. Joe brought in drummer Kevin Coffey from the band Project X, and the nucleus of MISERY was formed. Over the course of just a few years, the band recorded four albums “Misery Loves Company,” “Risk It All,” “Out of My Hands,” and “Violent Playground” with no outside producers or engineers. The result …Melodic Metal perfection. To date, the first two albums have been two of Eonian Records most sought-after releases, with “Out of My Hands” following closely in their footsteps. “Misery Loves Company ” features a cover of “Great Balls of Fire,” made famous by Jerry Lee Lewis, a cousin of the late, great Mickey Gilley. Mickey played piano on the track as well. “Out of My Hands” also includes the cover of “Fairies Wear Boots” by Black Sabbath, which appeared on their 1970 album?Paranoid. The band brilliantly nailed both.
Joe Villarreal, guitarist for MISERY, “We are super excited to finally have “Out of My Hands” available for all our friends and fans. Sonically, we feel that this was our best effort up to that point. It’s a bit heavier, a tad bit darker but it rocks! So, if you liked the first two releases then you’ll love this one too. The digital remastering by Kevin Coffey is phenomenal and the job Eonian Records has done with this release is again, first rate. Sadly, the one regret is that Greg Gilley is not around to see this come to fruition, he would’ve been so stoked at how it all turned out. We hope everyone enjoys listening to this as much as we enjoyed putting it together!”
Stephen Craig, EONIAN RECORDS, “If single number two “Out of My Hands,” the opening track of MISERY’s third album of the same name, tells us anything about the Pasadena, Texas based band, it’s that they are about to unleash an absolute monster, a behemoth of a release that highlights just what a talented set of musicians they truly are. From that song forward, it continues to gain momentum while Joe Villarreal flattens anything in his path; Greg Gilley funnels angry verses into a goosebump-inducing chorus, while drummer Kevin Coffey churns out filthy grooves. “Out of My Hands” is jam-packed with everything MISERY gave us with “Misery Loves Company” and “Risk It All” …explosive riffs, fierce vocals, harmonies, and thumping rockers, but, if possible, the band had propulsive power to spare in album number three. Also, a rare unreleased recording, “Falling Again,” and cover of “Fairies Wear Boots” by Black Sabbath. A must-have or Hard Rock and Metal connoisseurs!”
