There are some ’80s bands that never really got their due. Vain leads that pack. They were/are the best Hard Rock band of their somewhat overlooked brethren. Still at it, Vain comes back with their new release Disintegrate Together.
The much-needed album opens with their first single, “Cold Like Snow.” It’s like they never slowed down. Singer/guitarist/songwriter Davy Vain still owns that effortless sleazy voice. He’s just a wicked cool vocalist. For some, his vocal style is take it or leave it. He’s authentic as hell, so just appreciate his unique voice.
“You Better Keep an Eye on That Girl” is one of the fastest songs here. Vain is accomplished at these kind of cheating songs, and this track is a warning while being catchy as all get out.
“Can’t You See Me Floating” has HIT slathered all over it. They don’t always write this kind of ear candy, but you’ll gravitate toward it again and again.
A shout-out to where they started is “Back in ’89.” Nostalgia, sure, and it’s just pure energy to recall their first release No Respect, unloaded to the masses in 1989.
It all comes to fruition with the title track “Disintegrate Together.” It’s really the first song where they take the foot off the gas pedal. They shine on the mid-tempo songs, with Davy’s voice just washing over you.
It’s needed to have a new Vain release today. With so many Hard Rock bands playing with the same formulaic blather, Vain doesn’t follow the crowd. They are their own animal. They sound like no other band.
Basically, Vain can’t lose.
