Gliss Devotion Implosion
by Curt Hauff
Staff Writer
In their label’s own words, Gliss’ new album, Devotion Implosion, is hazy experimental fucked up pop. That’s probably not an inaccurate description. The guitars are heavily effected with a fuzzy distortion. The mood of the album is mostly spacey and gloomy. The vocals are awash in reverb, creating a sleepy, dreamy sound.
The band has a true dedication to the art of experimenting with music. “Sleep”, “Anybody Inside” and “Love Songs” are all tracks that are reminiscent of a Doors or Hendrix song. The general tone and style of these songs is early ‘70s. The instrument tones, effects and equalization all seem borrowed from the same general time period as well.
While some of the tracks would be difficult to classify as pop, “Beauty” is one song that stands out from the rest as a pop song. The melody is bouncy and the mood is upbeat. This track sounds a lot like something you’d hear from The Whigs.
If you’re the type of person who misses the wild, unadulterated exploration of the Doors, Gliss is a band you should hear. If you like your music edgy and unique, Devotion Implosion will be a spectacular album. If you think mainstream pop sucks raunchy, egg salad – spicy chicken wing induced ass, give Gliss a listen.
