Living legend and influential guitarist Steve Vai came to Southern California ending his US 2012 tour. Vai known as a student of Joe Satriani, founder of Favored Nations music label, Make the Noise Foundation, and as well as David Lee Roth’s guitarist on the Eat ‘Em and Smile and Skyscraper album’s and tours. Since his early days playing with Zappa, Vai has been moving along non-stop pushing forward with his music endeavors.
His 2012 US tour ended at the Canyon Club. The show was sold out and extremely entertaining. With backdrop on a single eye and various color lights the band came out and with Vai decked out in a black cowboy hat and long coat. The two and half hour show with was full of energy starting which started with the song “Racing with the World.”
The show included songs on acoustic guitars performed by Vai and Dave Weiner, both playing rhythm guitar together and solos. Other songs included: “Gravity Storm,” “The Moon & I,” “Whispering a Prayer,” and “Rescue Me or Bury Me” (performed acoustically).
Steve talked to the crowd and let those in front of the stage touch the guitar and plucking the strings. He changed into different outfits throughout he set; one costume was a lighted spaceman suit.
While Vai held everyone’s attention for the majority of the show his harpist, Deborah Henson-Conant, was also was given the spotlight to solo on her instrument of choice. She performed this on an electric harp that had lights attached and was strapped to her to carry. The solo added a different dimension to the show.
Jeremy Colson drum solo featured him performing in a specially made harness. The setup made him into a one-man-band and was complete with like a one man drum band) with lights, cymbals and a talking skull that also has smoke from its mouth.
Vai brought two audience members on the stage to compose a song verbally that he and his band then performed. It was cool the interaction with the audience and fun which his show is.
The Europe tour will be just as fun for the band and fans.
