Deathcore band Within the Ruins, hailing from Westfield, Massachusetts joined Born of Osiris on their 2017 New Reign Tour (Part II) alongside Volumes, Betraying The Martyrs, and Widowmaker at Gramercy Theatre stop in New York City on June 25, 2017. Their return to New York was a long-awaited performance made up from a postponed tour date earlier in the year on March 14, 2017 (just after the release of their latest album Halfway Human) initially due to inclement weather. Within the Ruins have been touring and promoting heavily in support of the release of their most recent, fifth full-length studio album release.
The band started their electrifying set with the heavy hitters “Gods Amongst Men” and “Beautiful Agony,” showcasing the quintessential Within the Ruins sound uniquely marked with soaring and “glitchy” harmonic minor-laden leads and rhythms, powerhouse screamed and dirty vocals, and a crushing double-time low end. The middle of their set showcased some of the group’s deeper cuts, with classic tracks like “Feeding Frenzy,” “Invade,” and even the first album title “Tractor Pull.” Guitarist Joe Cocchi, along with the rest of the band, do a tremendous job in bringing the full sound of their studio albums to their live shows; something only economically doable with the aid of a (now ‘traditionally’ modern) laptop-run rig responsible for helping them cover all the various convoluted guitar layers, samples, effects and more. The crowd was clearly receptive as moshing and circle pits broke throughout their performance, with singer Tim Goergen egging on the room and keeping the energy elevated. Their set ended with the Phenomena heavy-hitter, “Calling Card,” and given the short amount of time they provided, the band did a stellar job at bringing the entire house down and setting the stage as solid tour support (something they are clearly well beyond). We hope they’ll come back soon as the so deserved headlining entertainers they are. Within the Ruins are gearing up for Summer Breeze Open Air 2017 with a massive lineup of Megadeth, Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom, August Burns Red, Whitechapel, Hatebreed and more in Germany, August 16th – August 19th.
