Guitar legend George Lynch returned to Independence with his band Lynch Mob. The band consistently is an ever-changing lineup of musicians, which currently features bassist Sean McNabb, drummer Scott Cogan and vocalist Nathan Utz.
The crowd of fans waited eagerly and patiently for Lynch to take the stage. Preceded by three opening bands, Lynch Mob took the stage at 11 pm and performed a balanced set of Dokken and Lynch Mob classics, the band rocked the house for an hour and a half playing 15 songs. Quite the blast from the past, absolutely no filler tracks here, excluding the cover of “Red House” the set was split evenly between seven Dokken and seven Lynch Mob songs.
Nathan Utz recently took over vocal duties for Oni Logan, with big shoes to fill; he handled lead vocals originally sung by Don Dokken, Oni and Robert Mason with relative ease. Scott Cogan brought a whole lot of energy to the stage bashing away on his drum kit, providing backing vocals and taking center stage for Dokken’s “Unchain the Night.” The group’s performance of “When Heaven Comes Down” was f’ing heavy, Lynch’s rhythmic prowess is as great as his lead skills, and he proved it here on this timeless classic. Another great tune to hear live was “The Hunter,” great guitar play throughout, you gotta love Lynch. “Mr. Scary” was the featured instrumental; despite a poor performance by the sound engineer the band rocked this one as well.
The band took an opportunity to jam a bit while performing “Red House” and in the middle of “Wicked Sensation” where George and the gang went into a Fusion-esque groove.
Lynch made use of Marshall and Park guitar heads. Once they actually turned up the guitar, you could hear and feel his powerful, clear guitar tone cut through the PA.
Armed with his customized ESP guitar, he displayed his legendary skills on all those classic songs like “River of Love,” “Sweet Sister Mercy,” etc. One is always amazed by his serpentine fretwork … Lynch is serious about his craft, so much so, that he took to the mic and spoke harshly to the sound guys when they just couldn’t get their shit together. In addition, even while he was hot about it, it didn’t waver his intense performance of some great rocking songs.
It was a late evening, to say the least, but so worth it to see Lynch and company tear it up.
